Chapter 5

This is how Gene must have felt, being 17 hours late on a train ride.

This is Gene taking a train to begin his senior year at Devon.

Gene took a taxi took a taxi to my house instead of going straight to Devon.

This is how me and Gene were when he came to visit, before we began to fight. (He was the weird one)

Shattered leg.. ouch!

This is what I look like. I know, pathetic...

After the fall, I was obligated to stay with the doctor for a while. It was really rough at first. They say that it was a really 'messy' break, and that I should be walking again. The worst thing about this whole situation, is that sports are no longer available to me. This basically takes away my whole life. I heard the doctor telling Gene that I was alright, and was able to have a minimum number of visitors. I previously specifically asked for Gene, being that he's my best friend and all. He sounded unsure if he wanted to come and visit while he was talking to the doctor, I think he may have been feeling nervous. When the doctor revealed the news that I no longer could play sports, he sounded upset, almost as if he was in my position. I heard him crying but I couldn't believe that it was because of me. I didn't want him to feel bad for me, it's not like it was his fault or anything. After I let him in, I noticed that he looked worse than I did. "But I don't see why you should look so personally shocked. You look like ti happened to you or something" (57). He replied by saying "It's almost like it did! I was right there, right on the limb beside you" (57). We talked and I told him I remembered everything. He questioned about why I may have fell. I replied by saying "...I don't know, I must have just lost my balance" (58). He looked as if he had something on his mind, or something to say. I apologized to him because of this awful that I had, about falling from the tree. It was if I wanted to blame him for some stupid reason, though that would be ridiculous and obviously not true. Afterwards, he was being crazy by telling me he had something important to tell me, and that I wouldn't like it. He was cut off by the arrival of my doctor and could no longer stay to visit. The next day as well no visitors were allowed, they said I wouldn't be able to handle that much excitement. I did not see him again until the end of September, when he was on his way to begin the semester at Devon. He dropped by one day and I was very surprised and excited! I have been waiting for his arrival quite a while now. We chatted and told stories to one another, just like pals. It was sort of awkward though, because I was by the fireplace all cozy, and he usually does not see me like this. He told me nonsense that he caused my accident and my shattered leg. I became angry because this could not be true, he was just a fool. I knew it wasn't true, of course he didn't do that. After a moment it was time for him to be on his way. We said our goodbyes and I told him I would be back at Devon by Thanksgiving.
